The sound installation you will experience at Školská 28 is composed from audio recordings captured by participants of the 2-day workshop given by Simon Whetham as part of his residency with the gallery in January 2015. Through focused listening exercises, microphone construction, field recording sessions and a concert presentation, the participants provided the sounds and the inspiration for the composition.
Presented as a four-channel work, the sounds subtley compliment the peaceful atmosphere of the gallery and it's surroundings. This gives the listener access to sounds they would not normally hear combined with the acoustics of the space, echoing the activities of the workshop and subsequent concert.
Over the past nine years Simon Whetham has developed a practice of working with sound recordings and found objects as raw materials for composition and performance. The sounds are often environmental sounds he captures using a variety of methods and techniques in order to obtain discreet or obscured sonic phenomena.
In removing sound from it's source, through amplification and dislocation through movement, it becomes much more abstract – familiar, yet otherworldly. More recently, when presenting work in a performance or installation, for him the space and the objects within become instruments to be played.
