GUBA – Celebrate Christmas in a Hungarian way, with the screening of Hungarian animated short films, and traditional Christmas sweets ’mákos guba’

This collection of animations tries to represent a tendency in the Hungarian contemporary scene inbetween film and painting, stills and moving images, stationary and temporal arts.
The authors presented here, are from different generations. Chronologically the first film was made in the sixties, the last one was produced two years ago. The spectrum of techniques, like the different contents, are very broad. What brings them all together under the christmas tree is the reflection on the still image, on certain artpieces, or just on the medium of painting itself.

Jankovics Marcell: Fehérlófia (Son of the White Mare) 1982 81’
Marcell Jankovics is one of the better known Hungarian animators. The style of Son of the White Mare is influenced by both pop art and hungarian folk art ornaments.
The white mare give gives birth to a son, who grows up to be strong enough, to defeat the evil ones, who keep the three beautiful princesses captive. He even finds his long lost just as powerful brothers on his journey. This film earned his righteous place, amongst the "world’s best fifty animated-films ever", at the Los Angeles’ animation Olympic.
Szoboszlay Péter: Hé Te! (Hey You!) 7’
The only sentence you can hear in the film is the title itself. The anonymous main character and his environment is black and white, the visual style is as simple as the sonic one.
The shout Hé Te! first scares the character, but later he realizes the power of these words, and starts to destroy everything, but in the end he is scared by this sentence again.

The Sun and the Moon are stolen by a vicious creature. Can the humans get back, what they need for life?
Kovásznai György: Ca Ira - A francia forradalom dala
(Ca Ira –The March of the French Revolution ) (1973, 10,5’)
Classical painting film, about the main characters who identity with the French revolution, with the rhythm of the march of the revolution.
Magyarósi Éva: Hanne (2005, 5’)
Winner of Oberhausen Film Festival in 2006. This beautiful confession of love tells the story of a girl, and how she tries to escape from her lover.
Traub Viktória: Eső (Rain) 2007 05’
A vision about the universe which can be found in every single raindrop, in which the characters are depending on the rain, as they melt in the flood.
Andráskó Péter: Fénykor (Light-age) 2007 3’
The main characters in this film are light and a wax figure. The author was trained as a painter. His aim was to ’enlighten’ painterly problems with the the medium of animation.
