"Car Décalé (Légèrement)/Because Shifted (Slightly)" is a live performance
project to experiment, analyze, and re-define a space through audio
feedback (also known as the Larsen effect after the Danish
scientist, Søren Larsen, who first discovered its principles.) The piece will help audience to experience the ’aural space,’ unless otherwise masked behind the ’visual space’ which usually dominates most of our spatial perception.
Based in Brooklyn, New York, sound artist, composer, and core member of SHARE, o.blaat (Keiko Uenishi) is known for her sound works formed through experiments in restructuring and analyzing one’s relationship with sounds, through kinesthetic response as well as aural cognition.
Her solo works have been presented at many places around the world. (The Kitchen, Austrian Cultural Forum, Whitney Museum of American Art, P.S. 1, American Museum of Moving Image, Chelsea Art Museum, UnityGain, Rhizome.org, White Columns, Lincoln Center, MIT (Boston), etc.)
Her sound was described in Wired magazine as ’Unleashing an enchanted sea of sound: Fuzzed-out birdcalls flit through submarine drones, and scratchy beats crackle like a thousand records skipping as one’.
She has collaborated with numerous artists including: Ikue Mori, DJ Olive, Lloop, Miguel Frasconi, Timeblind, Eyvind Kang, Sachiko M, Tetsuji Akiyama, Aki Onda, Toshio Kajiwara, Christine Bard, Kaffe Matthews, Ralph Steinbrüchel, Günter Müller, Norbert Morslang, Anthony Coleman, Kurt Ralske, Lukasz Lysakowski, HC Gilje, Eric Redlinger, Klaus Filip, Karlheinz Essl, Bernhard Loibner, Takemura Nobukazu, Ryuichi Sakamoto, among others. She was a member of Marina Rosenfeld’s 17 piece guitar/powerbook orchestra, ’Sheer Frost Orchestra 2000’, and also was a member of laptops-and-electronics quartet with Ikue Mori, Kaffe Mathews, and Marina Rosenfeld, recorded with a commission by STEIM, Amsterdam, Holland, 2001.
o.blaat’s first CD "Two Novels: Gaze/In the Cochlea" was released from Portuguese label, cronica (http://cronicaelectronica.org) in 2004.
Her interactive performance pieces include: ’beat piece (with Ping-Pong game)’, ’audio coat check’, ’coupier’(for two laptops and multi-channel sound system), ’fillip’(light-audio interactive), ’across’(acoustic laptop with transistor radio), ’Suds Dreams’(audio-visual performative piece), ’moire’(audio-visual interactive with water). She also created installations ’Aboard: Fillip2’ (shown as a solo exhibition at Fortescue Gallery, London, UK in 2005), and ’J’ai un secret merveilleux: Midas’(a part of Citysonic 2006 Festival, Mons, Belgium).
Keiko Uenishi (o.blaat) was a recipient for Harvestworks’ Artist-In-Residence 2004 for New Works for surround sound system 5.1 and 2000-2001 Van Lier Foundation’s fellowship for New Sound Composers. Currently, she is an artist-in-residence 2006-7 at Center for Computer Music, Brooklyn College, NY, and working on Master of Science degree in Integrated Digital Media at Polytechnic University, Brooklyn, NY.
