Lloyd Dunn (aka The Nula) Project presents 55505 pareidolia, a screening program with live sound, a procession of images plucked from the world, layered and linked into a vaguely suggestive interpretation. The video screening is supported by a selection of ound works taken from the Nula Project, a series of filecasts that began in 2009.
The Nula project - A filecast is an assemblage, with elements taken from what recording devices have managed to capture during recent history, fragments of which lie now within easy reach, though scattered in disarray around us. Obscure, marginal, and unfamiliar content is favored; these elements are often in turn heavily manipulated. The composition of a filecast represents a response to what these found fragments might mean, and how they can be used to make something new. A filecast might suggest a documentary aspect (as in a field recording), but also offers a necessarily subjective response to the elements used. The emphasis in each of these works is more on ‘showing’ or ‘evoking’ rather than ‘expressing’. The Nula Project offers more or less detailed clues as to the significance, context, or interpretation of the works offered. It is up to the audience to make sense of the work as an arrangement of elements that somehow "work together" in sometimes non-obvious ways. There is an initial grand design, but it has no iron fist. Pains are taken to allow the audience's imagination plenty of room to play. The stark truth is that we make it up as we go along, playing by ear, trying to be resourceful, giving in to whim, and improvising. Nula is the word for ‘zero’ in many Slavic languages. For us it represents, not negation, but stands as an affirmation that Nula comes into being without our really knowing what it is we are trying to do. Nula is offered largely without explanation, for there is nothing to explain.
