Presentation of the ongoing artistic research on soundscape of several European brown coal mines and its context.

An important component of the current European land use, environmental and energetic strategies is the increase in, and persistence of opencast brown coal sites. Exploitation of the geological strata over the last 50 years have resulted in swift wide scale dereliction in some mining areas and slow decline elsewhere. Overall these changes have left the landscape with a significant legacy of brownfield sites. How is the current situation of brown coal mining in some areas of Europe? Is it possible effectively regenerate such vast derelict landscapes? What is the future of landscape influenced by the new technology of shale gas fracking?
Examples of the documenting process (image and sound) of several mining locations in North Bohemia and Germany will be presented.
Peter Cusack based in London and Berlin, works as a sound artist, musician and environmental recordist with a special interest in environmental sound and acoustic ecology. current project ‘Sounds From Dangerous Places’ examines the soundscapes of sites of major environmental damage, e.g. Chernobyl, the Azerbaijan oil fields, controversial dams on the Tigris and Euphratees river systems in south east Turkey and large scale opencast brown coal mines.

Udo Noll, based in Berlin, works as an artist and media professional in numerous international projects and exhibitions. He’s also the founder of radio aporee, an open and collaborative platform for the research about sound, art and space in today’s mixed realities.
Václav Cílek is Czech geologist, climatologist, writer, science popularizer and translator of Tao and Zen texts. Cílek coordinates numerous EU and UNESCO environmental and geological projects. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Papers of the Czech Speleological Union and member of editorial boards of major Czech scientific magazines. He has participated in field research expeditions to Asia and Africa.

Miloš Vojtěchovský, based in Prague, teaches at the Film Academy in Prague, works as curator, theorist, soundartist and occasionally as an organizer of unpopular cultural events.
