Uta-Maria Krapf
Resident Artist
1.12. – 16.12.
My current work is non-objective, and is based in the use of repeating, often symmetrical forms, which interact to create a new whole. My aim is to draw on and reveal the unknown and "other" as areas within which the work evolves. I am committed to this idea, and plan to continue to work with this relatively open conceptual approach.
The technique I employ involves the mixing of various pigments into a vehicle which carries the pigments. This allows me great flexibility in the application of the material. In recent work, I have been using gesso as my primary vehicle, mixing inks and watercolors into it.
I am interested in investigating (loosely based on traditional techniques) the use of egg yolk as a vehicle into which will be blended a variety of pigments, including gouache, watercolor and ink. This blend will be applied in a variety of consistencies, ranging from thick to wash. I am also interested in working with egg-based monoprints as a starting point, to which painted detail will be added.
I have in the past experimented with egg tempera techniques, but have not had the chance to dedicate myself exclusively to this process. In addition to investigating egg techniques, I plan to remain open to finding new substances to use as vehicles, as I find that new techniques invariably influence the formal qualities of my work. Your residency program would provide an excellent opportunity for me to explore this further.
