John Griffin

Resident Artist
28.12.7.1.

John is a London based photographer. He is drawn to locations as a walker, climber and photographer, often exploring locations which have a distinct sense of historical place. Interested in observation through the act of framing and editing Griffin is interested in the ways that a place can become subjective: more about the feeling a specific place can invoke in the artist and inform the act of creativity so that the photographic images become representative of inner worlds and states of mind rather than documents, records or literal interpretations of the environment . He has recently been working in the eerie atmospheric Orford Ness, the largest vegetated shingle spit Island in Europe located off the East coast of Suffolk, Britain. 'The Ness' was also secret military test site from 1913 until the mid 1980s during which time significant advances were made in both military hardware, experimental techniques and equipment. Since the late 1980s The Ness has been under the protection of the UK's National Trust with who Griffin has developed a substantial body of photographic work as well as organising numerous popular specially designed tours for artists and photographers. Griffin graduated from Nottingham University as a photographer in 1989, and has also worked on numerous commercial projects as working as a specialist in architectural photography with several UK based journals and newspapers including the Evening Standard Newspaper and Elle Magazine, as well as many architects and developers (http://griffindigital.co.uk).

The Project

Griffin and Creamer will use their time as Skolska 28 Resident Artists to research the basis of a new body of complimentary and perhaps collaborative work: Creamer has long been interested in exploring a new form in which photographic and drawn images, together with objects and the moving image, could be brought together to describe the trajectory of a series of connected journeys, both fictional and real, in the process acting as sort of 'Unrealised Films' series in which stories could be continually nested within other stories. Paralleling this, Griffin has recently been looking into the ways that ideas of psychogeography might be utilised within his photographic practice, and he will be similarly exploring the ways in which his photographs can relate to site and location in new ways: particular to this during his time in Prague he will be exploring ways the moving image, sound and voice could build new ways in which he could describe his walks and journeys through a location resonant with history. This will be Griffin's first trip to Prague.
