Chen, Audrey

Using the voice and cello, Chen’s work delves deeply into her own version of narrative and non-linear storytelling. A large component of her music is improvised, and her approach to this is extremely personal and visceral. Her playing explores preparations, traditional and extended techniques in both the voice and cello. She works to join these elements into a singular ecstatic personal language. More recent projects, aside from performing solo, include her longstanding voice-only duo with London-based artist Phil Minton, duos with NYC turntablist Maria Chavez, Norwegian trombonist Henrik Munkeby Nørsetbø, and Berlin-based electronics artists Doron Sadja and Richard Scott, plus a collaborative project with German conceptual artist John Bock. David Harrington of Kronos Quartet has described her work as “fascinating and gripping” and “possessing something extremely vital and vivid.” She has been based in Berlin since 2011 and continues to maintain an active international touring schedule.
