IIC – International Internal Catastrophes Novi_sad (Thanasis Kaproulias)
IIC – International Internal Catastrophes is an audio-visual project by Novi_sad + Isaac Niemand. It fosters dissonant elements, tempered by emphasis on layered exaggerations, which are capable of causing acutely synaesthetical reactions. Multi-layered epic abstract soundscapes, delighted with elegiac optical nuances and the profound sequential exploration of the notion of the terms “collapse-rebuild-isolate-take off…”, are the core, generative and fundamental force of this project. Amalgamated with unique dynamics, IIC is immersive, outrageous and extreme in its approach on the geometrical construction and demonstration of the composed sounds and visual parts. The first part is based on a wide range of audible and/or inaudible sonic phenomena and captured at Iceland. The second part is based on vibration recordings from Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges in NYC. Also in use, there is the voice of a woman mourning her murdered children during the war in Bosnia.
An excerpt from the second part entitled “Riotous Viscera”, has been selected and utilized by Lars von Trier for his project “Gesamt”, responding to the theme associated to James Joyce’s “Ulysses”.
Athens-based artist Thanasis Kaproulias, working under the moniker Novi sad is using amplified environmental recordings, drone manipulations, structured ambient soundscapes, microtones vs overtones. His artistic output displays a high level of technical ability, as well as a sensitivity to the nuances of location. Every sound is treated with a sculptural integrity and his approach is similar to the “cinema for the ear” and in turn lead to seeing by means of sound. Some of his projects are primarily focused in architectural acoustics and the relationship between architecture and sound, when other projects are based on various methods of audio analysis in extremely unique recordings and the use of quantitative and numerical data from different sources (NASA) among others.His projects have been presented internationally at the Venice Biennale Film Festival; MUTEK Festival, Montreal and Mexico City; or Le Fresnoy, Lille. He has collaborated with notable artists and filmmakers including Lars von Trier, Ryoichi Kurokawa, Isaac Niemand, Yorgos Zois and Karl Lemieux.
