Julyen Hamilton and Company
This will be the premiere of a new work created especially for vs. Interpretation by Julyen Hamilton. He will be leading a workshop during the week of the festival, with five prominent Czech and Slovak dancers – Radim Klásek, Bara Látalová, Daniel Raček, Jana Novorytová and Stanislava Vlčeková – along with acclaimed musicians Andrea Parkins and Ute Wassermann, through the process of creating and building a new performance.
Julyen Hamilton has been directing and teaching for the past 40 years. Hamilton has authored more than 100 solos seen all over the world, interplays between dance, live text, and decor, each made specifically for its venue. He has had three companies, most recently Allen’s Line in Brussels, Belgium, and has also been invited to choreograph for other dancers and to collaborate with other directors. Hamilton has performed as a dancer in collaboration with many musicians and in recent years as a poet and voice artist; he has performed with, among others: Barre Phillips, Michael Moore, Fred Frith, Malcolm Goldstein, Daniel Humair, Alfred Spirli, Xavier Garcia, Christian Reiner, Jean-Claude Jones, Vladimir Volkov, Tristan Honsinger, Sebi Tramontana, Axel Dörninger, and Ritsche Koch.
Andrea Parkins is an American composer, sound artist, performer, and improvisational musician based in New York. She is known for her inventive explorations on the electric accordion, generative sound processing, and arrangements of objects and sound. Recently, Parkins has been developing a series of interactive sound and image works inspired by the structures of Rube Goldberg's circuitous machines. Parkins has toured and exhibited internationally and has been presented at the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Kitchen, Experimental Intermedia, and Diapason Gallery for Sound and Intermedia. Parkins has been the recipient of various grants, awards, and residencies including Meet the Composer, New York State Council for the Arts, Harvestworks Media Art Center in New York City, Frei und Hanseastadt Hamburg Kulturbehoerde in Germany, and CESTA in the Czech Republic.
Ute Wassermann is a vocal soloist and composer/performer known for her extraordinary, many-voiced, and extreme vocal sound-language. As a soloist, Wassermann has performed in festivals, galleries, and clubs throughout Europe as well as in Australia and Asia. She performs regularly with musicians from the London scene and in duos with Richard Barrett, Aleks Kolkowski, and Birgit Ulher, in the quartet Speakeasy (with Phil Minton, Thomas Lehn and Martin Blume), as well as in larger formations such as the octet fORCH. As an interpreter of contemporary music she has given premieres of numerous works composed especially for her voice and has taken part in music theatre productions by Matthias Kaul (Ensemble L’art pour l’art), Salvatore Sciarrino, and Gerhard Stäbler, among many other projects.
