Tomasz Matuszak Trabant (born 1967 in Łódź) graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź from the Graphics Department. He works in the field of installation, sculpture, photography, video and public intervention. Many of his works are based on sustained involvement with the environment of the gallery or any given public space. By adding a specific comment to a ‘space,’ his works are integrated within it, creating a new or different meaning for habitual perceptions. Most of the works are therefore site-specific and seek to energize a space (indoor or outdoor), or a social or political situation by making these spaces a key element of the viewer’s experience.
Matuszak’s works has been exhibited in many solo and group exhibitions including the Gale Gates Gallery in New York, Wschodnia Gallery in Łódź, Kunstpunkt Gallery in Berlin, Museum of Modern Art in Haifa, or the Zachęta National Gallery in Warsaw. He participated in exhibitions and residencies in Germany, Australia, Israel, Spain, India, Austria, Lithuania and Sweden.
He has received scholarships from institutions like ArtsLink —New York, Schloss Solitude —Stuttgart, Germany, ART / OMI —USA, Leitrim Sculpture Centre —Ireland and Ministry of Culture and National Heritage in Poland. From 2007, he has been teaching at the Department of Sculpture and Interactive Actions in the Academy of Fine Arts in Lodz, Poland.
