Echoing the telecommunications wires circling the globe, the cables of suspension and stay-cabled bridges reverberate with unexpected sounds, each structure creating a unique texture, rhythm and sonic environment.
Australian Jodi Rose is a nomadic artist, writer, performer and creator of Singing Bridges, an urban sonic sculpture using the suspension cables of bridges as musical instruments on a global scale. She has traversed the globe from Helsinki to the Mekong delta, New York to Besançon, in her endless quest for bridge music. Produced using field recordings, on-site interventions and improvisations, her fascination with the music of bridges has led to numerous collaborations with artists around the world. Rose continues to explore the philosophical and musical aspects of cable vibrations through global transmissions and installations, developing a musical interface for model bridge instruments, and hosting on-site sonic interventions. She imagines linking bridges all over the world in a Global Bridge Symphony.
Her ongoing project “Traces” explores the artistic, research and curatorial responses to nomadic urban and social contexts, and makes use of creative strategies and a blend of artistic endeavours, philosophical reflections and exploratory workshops. In this manifestation, we attempt a tracing of these intangibles, the inter-contamination and cross-breeding of ideas, knowledge and creative works, with inter-related video and audio material available through the use of QR Codes.
Rose has also released
Singing Bridges: Vibrations and Variations, a CD of bridge compositions and remixes. Her works have been exhibited, broadcast and published in Australia, Scandinavia, UK, Asia, Europe and America. Jodi Rose has also completed a permanent sound installation on the Eleanor Schonell Bridge in Brisbane.
