The Sky Trembles and the Earth is Afraid and the Two Eyes Are Not Brothers

A film by Ben Rivers
8 October 2018, 8:30 PM
Cinema Ponrepo

Shot against the staggering beauty of the Moroccan landscape, from the rugged terrain of the Atlas Mountains to the stark and surreal emptiness of the Sahara, with its encroaching sands and abandoned film sets, Rivers draws us into a hallucinatory and perilous adventure of cruelty and madness. At the heart of the film’s multiple narratives is an adaptation of A Distant Episode, the savage short story set in Morocco by American author Paul Bowles, first published in 1947. Moving between documentary, fiction and fable, The Sky Trembles and the Earth Is Afraid and the Two Eyes Are Not Brothers observes its protagonist, played by the Morocco-based filmmaker Oliver Laxe in the midst of directing his own film, only to walk off set and into Rivers’ narrative, forming a multi-layered excavation into the illusion of cinema itself.

Architecture and the Senses: Program

Seminar, Workshops, Discussion
National Technical Museum
Center for Architectural Heritage Plasy
Mathey Hall, Plasy Monastery, Opatská konírna
12–14 October 2018

Acoustics, much like light, or space, whether in the landscape or in architecture, actively influence our emotional state and our way of thinking. Sound orients us in both time and space, fine-tuning our social connections, constituting a discourse which we have begun to revisit only in the last few decades. As invisible as is radiation or microchemical contamination, acoustic pollution is a factor with a palpable impact on the crisis-state of today’s environment. We are inclined to underestimate its urgency, and have consistently failed to develop the political, social and technical tools to limit the broad impact of all forms of pollution, including acoustic pollution. The goal of this interdisciplinary gathering of specialists and the interested public is to foster a discussion about the relationship between architecture, art, ethology, and social and environmental issues, to focus on intersections between aesthetics, ethics, acoustics of architecture, geometry, natural science, the humanities and art.

Saša Spačal

Artist Residency

Saša Spačal is a postmedia artist working at the intersection of research into living systems with contemporary and sound art. Spačal’s work focuses primarily on the posthuman period, in which human beings exist and act as one of many elements in the ecosystem, though not as sovereigns. She therefore abandons a cartesian mindset with the acceptance of the fact that technology has expanded not only from hardware to software, but also now includes wetware, resulting in hybrid phenomena that are inscribed in mechanical, digital and organic logic.
